If you’re running your own social media initiatives, you’ll sometimes feel like this is the case. You build up your Facebook page with great content, and sometimes throw out a question hoping that people chime in. And then nothing happens. Crickets.

Before you start wondering why no one wants to talk to you, you might think of it like a new group who is just getting together for the first time, or maybe a class you had in school on the first day…..no one wants to be the first to answer.

To help it along, sometimes it’s good to be the first to reply from your personal page so that the conversation gets going. This can help sometimes, especially when you have a new page up and running. If people see one comment, it may encourage them to post a comment too.

I did this once when our page was in its early stages of existence – I had posed a question and waited for that first response, and waited, and waited some more. I decided to try to get the conversation going my commenting from my own page. A while later, I replied to my own comment from our business page, and got a little too caught up in it all before I realized I was having a conversation with myself!

It takes a lot to get the conversation going….be patient and it WILL happen! Sometimes, in social media, you do feel like you’re talking to yourself – a lot – but it does get better over time. Try starting the conversation this way and see if it helps. If not, you may be asking the wrong questions (try another topic), or your page may not have enough exposure yet. At any rate, don’t give up – social media marketing takes time and a lot of patience!
